  • Linguistics is the scientific study of language. The main goal of this
class is to give students a better understanding of language and of the
similarities and differences between human languages. In the first
semester, we will think about the nature of language: What is language?
How is human language different from animal communication? How do
children learn language? How do linguists study language? Then we will
study about the sounds of languages. We will learn the IPA symbols for
consonants and vowels and practice using them. At the end of the
semester, we will look at words and how they are built up from smaller
parts, and then how words combine to form sentences. Throughout the
semester, we will read and listen to data [samples of language] from
many different languages of the world.
